Design projects have ranged from simple additions and renovations to new 3-story wood-framed apartments, long-term-care facilities and hotels.  John has provided construction inspection services for numerous projects. 


Having grown up in a home built in the 1800s, John is particularly aware of past construction practices and performance issues faced by historic structures. 

​Example projects include:

  • Triangle Modernist Houses.  Assisted local preservation group with the design and inspection of structural repairs to architecturally significant home.   
  • Delta Zeta Sorority, Oxford, OH.  Identified problems, designed and specified repairs and provided construction management services for a $350K repair of major structural defects in a 5 year old sorority house in Chapel Hill, NC.  Performed maintenance studies, prepared renovation designs and evaluations for chapter houses at the University of Virginia, DePauw University, Southwest Missouri State University and the University of Illinois.  Designed and oversaw the fast-track total renovation of a circa 1924 4-story Federalist Style building housing the chapter at the University of Virginia.
  • Synthetic Stucco Investigations.   Performed moisture intrusion evaluations on over 100 homes, including expert witness testimony regarding construction defects and repair designs and inspections.
